Position Description

POSITION: Academic Department/Program Chair
REPORTING FUNCTION: Academic Department (or Program) Chairs report directly to the Academic Dean of their campus.

OVERVIEW
Herzing University is seeking an energetic and experienced academic leader for the position of Online Campus Program Chair. The position does not require relocation. Herzing University is a private; regionally-accredited; multi-campus; associate, baccalaureate and graduate-level; career-oriented University with over a 40-year history of providing life changing educational opportunities to students from all walks of life.

The Program Chair for Technology programs will report directly to the Campus Dean and will oversee the delivery of courses in support of students in all technology programs. Responsibilities of the Program Chair include faculty recruitment, training, scheduling, and supervision; student retention and management of course development activities. Applicants must hold a Master degree and should have at least two years of academic administration experience preferably managing computer science, networking and other technology related programs. MCSA, CCNA and A+ certifications preferred.

A. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Department or Program Chairs are academic/administrative positions within the organization of the campus. The duties of a Department/Program Chair are both instructional and supervisory in nature encompass all courses and programs assigned to the chair by the campus Academic Dean. The duties of the chair in respect to teaching are outlined in the Herzing College Faculty Handbook as is the case for all faculty members. The duties relating to the role as Department or Program Chair fall into seven major areas: supervisory, administrative, instructional, curriculum, assessment, student satisfaction and retention, and professionalism. The specific duties of these areas are as follows:

B. SUPERVISORY:
1. Provides direct supervision, where applicable, to the campus faculty assigned to the Department or Program Chair by the Academic Dean.
2. Establishes and monitors faculty performance standards and goals for assigned faculty.
3. Conducts ongoing and annual performance reviews of assigned faculty as outlined in the employee and faculty handbooks.

C. ADMINISTRATIVE:
1. Assists the Dean in establishment of class schedules in accordance with course and program requirements.
2. Assures that grades and records from assigned faculty are submitted accurately and promptly in accordance with Colleges grading policy and procedure.
3. Assures that class attendance is reported by assigned faculty in accordance with the Colleges policy and procedure.
4. Assists the Academic Dean in the enforcement of the Colleges rules as published in the Herzing College Catalog, Faculty Handbook, Student Handbook and Corporate Bulletins.
5. Assists the Academic Dean in determining the need for computer resources, materials and supplies, textbooks and other materials that are to be used for instructional and learning resource purposes of assigned courses/programs.
6. Makes recommendations to the Academic Dean with respect to replacing instructional equipment related to assigned courses/programs.
7. Makes recommendations to the Academic Dean with respect to the acquisition of new equipment for instructional purposes.
8. Establishes procedures with the Academic Dean for adequate service arrangements for instructional equipment to minimize downtime relating to assigned courses/programs.
9. Ensures faculty personnel files for assigned faculty are maintained according to College policies.
10. Is responsible for the implementation and security of all of the tests and examinations used in assigned courses/programs.

D. INSTRUCTIONAL:
1. Teaches courses as assigned by the Academic Dean
2. Assists the Academic Dean in the recruitment and selection of teaching staff through establishing the position requirements, reviewing applications and interviewing candidates. Ensures that thorough reference checks are done on all candidates. Serves as a member of the review panel for faculty candidates mock presentations.
3. Assists the Academic Dean in the administration and supervision of faculty training, development, and promotion as outlined in the Faculty Handbook.
4. Acts as the Resource Person for faculty working on the Faculty Development modules or other faculty development materials.
5. Regularly monitors quality of instruction by assigned faculty members through classroom visits for traditional format classes and review of online student interaction in the online class section in online or hybrid courses.
6. Assists the Academic Dean in the administration of student satisfaction surveys including (but not necessarily limited to) end-of-course critiques, HAPPI surveys and the All-College Survey.
7. Assists the Academic Dean in the assignment of teaching functions in accordance with established workload norms, teacher expertise and teacher interests.
8. Manages student internship and/or clinical programs that are part of assigned programs.
9. Encourages a high level of faculty morale by being readily available to discuss with assigned faculty their needs, questions and frustrations, and by promoting positive attitudes among the staff and the students of the Campus.
10. Holds regular meetings with assigned teaching faculty to keep them apprised of College policy and objectives as well as to share and search for solutions to common teaching problems that arise from time to time.

E. CURRICULUM:
1. Assures high academic standards through the establishment of appropriate student evaluation mechanisms for assigned courses/programs.
2. Initiates local curriculum development activities in accordance with the Colleges curriculum development policy for assigned courses/programs.
3. Serves as the campus representative to the applicable College-wide curriculum sub-committee(s) for assigned programs.
4. Assists the Academic Dean in maintaining and using the campus advisory board for the purpose of curriculum and textbook review and direction for assigned courses/programs.
5. Maintains current course outlines for all assigned courses.
6. Keeps current with state/accreditation reporting requirements related to assigned courses/programs and assists the Academic Dean to ensure appropriate materials are available as required to support any change approval.

F. ACCREDITATION & LICENSURE:
1. Is responsible for obtaining and maintaining state licensure for the program where applicable.
2. Is responsible for obtaining and maintaining specialized accreditation for the program where applicable.
3. Prepares and submits all required periodical reports to state licensure and specialized accreditation agencies in a timely manner.
4. Coordinates all submissions to licensure or specialized accreditation agencies through the Campus Academic Dean and the College Vice President for Academic Affairs.

G. ASSESSMENT:
1. Actively engages in and promotes student academic achievement assessment processes and procedures for students in assigned courses and programs.
2. Uses student academic achievement assessment data to improve instructional methodologies.

H. STUDENT SATISFACTION AND RETENTION:
1. Monitors student retention and satisfaction in assigned courses/programs.
2. Assists the Academic Dean in developing action plans for improving student retention/satisfaction.
3. Interacts in a fair and impartial way with students.
4. Listens to and evaluates student problems and concerns from students in assigned courses/programs, counseling them within the norm of society and the regulations of the College.
5. Assists the Academic Dean in mediating student-faculty conflicts in a professional manner.

I. PROFESSIONALISM:
1. Portrays a positive, professional image of and for the College at all times.
2. Completes professional development activities as established through consultation with the campus Academic Dean.
3. Cooperates with all members of the campus faculty and management team.
4. Assists the Academic Dean with other curricular and/or administrative duties as required.

J. OTHER DUTIES:
Performs other duties as assigned by the campus Academic Dean.

REQUIREMENTS
1. Must have a minimum of a masters degree (unless waived by the College Vice President of Academic Affairs) as well as expertise in the subject matter of assigned courses/programs.
2. Must be capable of providing leadership and inspiration to assigned faculty.
3. Must be highly structured and organized.
4. Must be sufficiently technically oriented to understand the technical objectives of assigned programs.
5. Must be capable of writing in clear and communicative manner and delivering organized, informative presentations.
