Job Description

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was crafted from the beginning to be human-capable.

As part of a hardworking team of diverse engineers, you will conduct analysis to define the performance and operations of various spaceflight systems, define hardware requirements, and resolve technical challenges. You will share the team's impact on all aspects of the systems throughout their lifetime, from early conceptual design and configuration to flight operations.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and dedication to quality to impact safe human spaceflight positively. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Responsibilities:
  • Documentation of stress analysis to support the release of engineering drawings/documents
  • Improving enterprise analysis capabilities such as crafting process automation tools for model creation, strength checks, and analysis report generation
  • Mentoring designers and junior structural analysts in stress/thermal/stability/fracture analysis and practices
  • Providing technical mentorship on design concepts (risk vs. cost vs. performance)
  • Maintain and report on activity schedule, budget, and technical status
  • Supporting other teams and team members with inputs for configuration development and trade studies
  • Collaborate regularly with manufacturing and other teams

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in engineering and 5+ years of confirmed ability with aircraft, spacecraft, launch vehicle structures, or automotive
  • Experience with one or more structural modeling tools (ANSYS Workbench, HyperWorks, ABAQUS, etc.)
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
  • Understanding of FEM modeling techniques (boundary conditions, bolted connections, contact, verification methods, elastic, and elastoplastic analysis, etc.)
  • Comprehensive understanding of material mechanics and metallic failure modes.
  • Experience with static and multifaceted (modal, random vibration, transient) analysis methods.
  • Experience with development and/or qualification testing (test requirements, setup/configuration, test predictions, test conduct/monitoring, etc.)
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and strengthen our culture of inclusion
  • You must be a U.S. citizen or national, a U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder) or have been lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

Preferred Qualifications:
  • MS Degree in engineering and 10+ years of experience with aircraft, spacecraft, launch vehicle structures, or automotive
  • Proven understanding of fatigue/fracture (NDE methods, fail-safe vs. safe life, NASA-STD-5019)
  • Ability to understand and build free-body diagrams for internal and reaction load derivation
  • Familiarity with classical aerospace sizing methods (ex: Bruhn, Niu, Roark)
  • Analysis of metallic and/or composite structures (orthogrid/isogrid, skin-stringer, fittings, sandwich panels, etc.)
  • Analysis of stability critical structures (local buckling phenomenon, global buckling, crippling)
  • Bolted joint hand calculations (bolt preload, joint stiffness, shear-tension interaction, insert pull-out, NASA-STD-5020 etc.)
  • Proven process automation experience using scripting languages (Matlab, Ansys APDL, Python, VBA, Fortran 77/90+, etc.) is highly desired.
  • Experience with analysis and operations of launch vehicles (boosters or upper stages) or spacecraft.
  • Composite design and analysis skills in any thermoset, thermoplastic, metal matrix, or ceramic matrix composites
  • Experience in writing detailed design and analysis reports
  • Experience with analyzing/disposition non-conformances
  • Experience with Creo (Pro-Engineer Wildfire 4 or greater)
