This position is part of the Space Systems Development (SSD) business unit. SSD develops next-generation concepts and systems to advance our future of living and working in space sustainably.

As part of a hardworking team of diverse specialists, technicians, and engineers, and as the Structures and Mechanisms Senior Manager for Space Systems Development, and reporting to the Director of Vehicle Engineering, you will be accountable for the design (form, fit, function), design for manufacturing, and engineering product release of all primary and secondary structural products and mechanisms for a space vehicle program. Structural products are comprised of metallic and carbon composite structures, pressurized and unpressurized structure, and structural support of spacecraft components. Mechanisms products are comprised of separation systems, actuators, hatches, docking systems, or deployable items.

You will be responsible for managing a diverse product team to perform spaceflight structures and mechanisms conceptual and detailed design, drawing creation, product release, hardware manufacturing, and procurement to meet aggressive mass targets and schedule milestones within an acceptable risk posture. You will additionally be responsible for managing the career development, work performance, mentorship, and career and technical guidance for all members of your product team.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for directing a technical team to design mass efficient vehicle structures and reliable mechanisms that satisfy requirements, and comply with intra-vehicle interfaces.
  • Recruit, hire, manage, delegate to, and mentor a diverse, equitable, and inclusive team
  • Manage your direct reports' professional development (e.g., hiring, performance reviews, compensation and promotion management, routine one-on-one development conversations) and coach them on performance.
  • Develop technical plans to meet deliverables on an aggressive schedule
  • Eliminate roadblocks for your team
  • Develop modeling, drawing, and design for manufacturability processes that result in efficient and consistent released engineering products
  • Perform technical leadership and make data-informed executive decisions when needed on design-related topics across the vehicle portfolio
  • Coordinate between vehicles to ensure consistent structural design practices are being utilized where it is reasonable
  • Identify and execute key areas to perform hardware prototyping and testing to fail fast and early
  • Embody, promote, and coach the Blue Origin leadership principles

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in engineering or another technical field
  • 8+ years experience in aircraft or space vehicle design, geometric dimension and tolerancing, and product release
  • Interest in managing technical teams and/or leading functional groups
  • Experience in aeronautical or space vehicle frame design, manufacturing, and assembly for structures including metallics and/or composites
  • Experience or familiarity with mechanisms such as release mechanisms, doors, electromechanical actuators, docking mechanisms, possibly including design, multibody analysis, fabrication, test and operation.
  • Experience in managing flight hardware products from cradle to grave
  • Experience with supplier management
  • Experience in employee professional development and performance assessment and alignment
  • Experience in documentation, design, and analysis artifact configuration control
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary development projects, including managing requirements, priorities, scope, and schedule, and cost
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in model-based definition and limited dimension drawings
  • Experience with PTC products such as Windchill and Creo
  • Experience with wiki and issue ticketing systems

Compensation range for on site WA applicants is $167,088-$233,923
