Job Description

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of Enterprise Program Management (EPM), where we provide technical standards, tools, processes, training, and subject matter expertise for product engineering and manufacturing. EPM allows all Blue Origin business units to benefit from commonly used capabilities, hardware, and software and assists business units in identifying, selecting, and training engineers from both inside and outside the organization.

As part of a hardworking team of diverse specialists, technicians, and engineers, you will lead the charge for EEE parts-level, circuit-level, and system-level radiation effects testing that will directly impact all of Blue's space missions. Your primary focuses will be understanding our missions' electronic platforms, deriving the required radiation testing needs, and efficiently planning/executing tests for the effects of total ionizing dose (TID), displacement damage dose (DDD), and single events (SEE). Strong experience with radiation test automation, data collection, and data processing is required.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop custom radiation test setups, including any required software, with emphasis on automated data collection and processing.
  • Design custom PCBs for radiation test.
  • Evaluate electronic components against mission radiation hardness requirements.
  • Evaluate internal and external radiation test data for compliance with hardness requirements and industry standards.
  • Perform and lead radiation tests (TID, DDD, SEE) at external facilities (up to 20% travel).
  • Lead programs and customers through part selection and test planning based on available test data, cost and schedule constraints, etc.
  • Thoroughly document radiation test plans and results; review, edit, and approve team documents.
  • Own and lead upgrades to Blue's radiation test database in an efficient manner.
  • Lead program personnel on parts selection and test procedures to meet cost and schedule constraints.
  • Interface with radiation test facilities to schedule and perform tests.
  • Serve as a technical reference and mentor to Blue teammates regarding industry test standards and best practices for parts of all technology types (CMOS, bipolar, BiCMOS, GaN, GaAs, etc.).
  • Evaluate industry and academic trends in radiation testing needs; maintain radiation team's capabilities in line with state-of-the-industry standards.
  • Identify and drive needed improvements in Blue's in-house radiation test capabilities and laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Nuclear Science, or related field with 7+ years of proven direct experience in radiation effects testing (TID, DDD, and SEE).
  • Proficiency with Python (highly preferred) and/or NI LabView programming and embedded software.
  • Hands-on experience developing component test and measurement hardware in an automated and reproducible manner.
  • Experience with Altium, OrCAD, or similar ECAD PCB design software.
  • Strong understanding of the effects of radiation on electronics.
  • Basic understanding of the effects of radiation on materials.
  • Strong grasp of basic and complex digital and analog circuitry (transistors, logic, memories, microcontrollers, FPGAs, etc.),
  • Extensive experience with associated laboratory test equipment (power supplies, signal generators, SMUs, oscilloscopes, etc).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships across teams, and contribute to our inclusive culture.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
  • Domestic travel required. Foreign travel possible.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in related engineering or technical field with 7+ years of direct experience in radiation design, analysis, and testing of avionics hardware for operation in radiation environments.
  • Proficiency with the following programming languages, platforms, and protocols: C, SVN, Gitlab, SQL, I2C, SPI, VHDL/Verilog.
  • Strong familiarity with US radiation test facilities.
  • Willingness to expand capabilities into system radiation analysis and circuit design guidance for radiation-tolerant systems.
  • Demonstrated understanding and application of fundamental statistical methods.
  • Experience with one or more standard radiation environment modeling tools, including but not limited to IRENE, OMERE, SIRE2, SPENVIS, OLTARIS, CREME96, SAPPHIRE, ESP, or PSYCHIC.
  • Experience with one or more radiation transport codes, including but not limited to NOVICE, FASTRAD, SHIELDOSE2, GEANT4, or MCNP.
