Seeking a Transportation Hydraulics Lead/Project Manager for HDR's Denver office to provide leadership support in project delivery, business development, and growth of HDR's Transportation Hydraulics Group in the Colorado Region. Primary duties include (1) assisting the Colorado Transportation Hydraulics Business Class Lead in the development of strategic planning (2) Project Management and oversight of technical project delivery, (3) profitability, (4) quality control, (5) staff development and morale, and (6) business development and marketing support. The CO Transportation Business Group is active in the aviation, transit, freight rail, highway and local roads, and Federal market sectors. This position is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to grow the Transportation Hydraulics Group through increasing market share with existing clients and diversification of the client base.

The Transportation Hydraulics Lead/Project Manager will serve as Project Manager / Hydraulics Lead on key projects, and will be administratively responsible for the Denver Transportation Hydraulics Group staff and technical service functions, and may lead and coordinate hydraulics services with other business groups within the Colorado and North Central Region. This leader will participate in recruitment and will train, develop, and manage personnel.

The Transportation Hydraulics Lead/Project Manager will promote HDR through active engagement in professional organizations to increase industry visibility throughout the region. Coordinate with area client managers and marketing staff to identify projects and contract opportunities with existing and new clients and may directly coordinate with national business class leaders to leverage the full resources of HDR to expand service offerings and grow market share.

Project Management duties will focus on projects related to state government, municipal, and local water resources clients. Our team focuses on hydrologic analyses, hydraulic modeling, and design for flood mitigation, stream restoration, and transportation drainage projects with opportunities to work on all project phases from program management to master planning, design, and construction. In the role of a Transportation Hydraulics Lead/Project Manager, we'll count on you to:

  • Direct and coordinate work of single or multidiscipline teams (roadway, structural, traffic, utilities, ROW, environmental) involved in the project, coordinate with all subconsultants, coordinate with the client, keep project on schedule, keep project within budget, perform or ensure that quality control is accomplished for each project, supervise highway/roadway design team or teams, and perform more complicated design work on larger projects
  • Responsible for all aspects of complex small to medium projects or routine large projects.
  • Perform project and task-level management, leading and directing technical staff, as well as hands-on project engineering for all phases on a wide variety of water resource projects.
  • Manage/lead/develop H&H modeling including 1D/2D hydraulic models to support planning and design of a wide range of flood and transportation hydraulic projects including stream rehabilitation and restoration, complex culverts and bridges, floodplain impacts, and other hydraulic structures, and stormwater collection systems.
  • Manage/lead/develop engineering design including plans, specifications, cost estimates, and contract documents for a diverse variety of water resources infrastructure.
  • Lead/develop preparation of technical and non-technical reports and presentations including visualization of data.
  • Assist with business development activities including client relations, marketing pursuits, and project proposals.

More specific responsibilities include project and task-level management activities, as well as project engineering, design, and planning in the development and analysis of transportation hydraulic projects. Individual should be able to work independently as well as plan, organize, and assist groups of small to medium size teams of professionals and technicians.

Successful candidates will be directly responsible for strategic clients, projects, and project staffing and must be able to work cooperatively with area business class leaders, section managers, operations managers, technical directors and marketing managers.

They will also be expected to develop and implement HDR's technology, standards, project delivery practices, equipment, tools, and associated training programs for the successful execution of project work.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline is required. A Master's degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years working experience related to hydraulics engineering, water resource engineering, and permitting for transportation project required
  • Colorado PE
  • Strong communication and listening skills
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments
  • Good leadership and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • CFM Preferred
  • Minimum of 15 years working experience related to hydraulics engineering, water resource engineering, and permitting for transportation project required
  • Minimum of 8 years' Project Management experience
  • Experience in water resources planning, hydrology/hydraulics, and drainage/flood control design
  • Project experience and existing relationships with DOT and municipal clients
  • Must have technical proficiency preparing hydrologic and hydraulic analyses and reports, scour investigations, erosion and sediment control plans and reports, drainage and stormwater management design, waterway and NPDES permitting, quantity & cost estimates, and specifications
  • Experience with standard drainage analysis and design packages including but not limited to AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation OpenRoads Designer, StormCAD, EPASWMM, XPSWMM.
  • HEC-RAS 1D/2D and/or SRH-2D river modeling experience is preferred
  • ArcGIS Pro and HEC-HMS experience is preferred
  • Local candidates are preferred
