The Team:

HDR has a rapidly growing structural engineering practice in Denver, Colorado that is part of a multi-discipline group of Building Engineering professionals providing support to a diverse portfolio of projects. Recent growth and development in both our Structural Engineering and overall Building Engineering Services teams has created an exciting opportunity for new leadership of our structural engineering practice in Denver.

Our team serves projects in both architectural and infrastructure related markets. These include commercial, municipal, higher education, justice, healthcare, federal, water/wastewater, energy, solid waste, industrial, and transportation sectors. We serve projects for both internal and external clients. Projects are located in Colorado, the Rocky Mountain Region, and across the United States.

In addition, HDR has a strong network of structural engineering teams both within the US and globally and we share knowledge and resources among our teams. Our teams work in an integrated manner with professionals in a wide variety of disciplines, both in our Denver office and across the United States. The Job:

The Colorado Structural Engineering Business Class Leader is responsible for the growth, operations, and technical leadership of the structural team which encompasses design, staff development and mentoring, workload management, profitability, morale, and quality control. We will rely on you to lead and grow a dynamic team of structural engineering professionals based in our Denver, Colorado office. You will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of leadership of this team and engaging current and future leaders within our practice to participate in several of these aspects, including:

  • Recruitment: Identifying current and future talent needs and recruiting qualified professionals to grow our team, in collaboration with HDR's recruiting team, and provide new employee mentoring.
  • Management: Workload forecasting, work sharing with other structural teams, performance reviews, salary reviews, tracking budget status, scope of work, and scope changes. Schedule and conduct section meetings to discuss productivity, workload, and quality control issues.
  • Professional Development: Providing staff with opportunities for training, participation in professional organizations, and mentoring and advocating for staff in their paths to licensure and/or career advancement within HDR.
  • Business Development: Networking with prospective clients, participating in project pursuits, identifying the right talent to serve projects, and developing scope and fee for potential projects.
  • Internal and External Networking: maintaining relationships and ensuring high quality of service to external clients and internally with other HDR business groups, disciplines, project managers, structural teams, and leadership.
  • Technical Leadership: ensuring that HDR's standards and QA/QC policies are strictly followed, serving as QC reviewer for projects, serving as a technical resource for staff and colleagues, and cultivating a culture of quality and excellence.
  • Project Management: Leading the structural design of projects for which you are Engineer of Record. Periodically reviewing that structural hours spent on all projects are within project budgets, periodically reviewing that progress of projects are meeting schedules, and taking corrective action as necessary.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Architectural Engineering (ABET accredited) with emphasis in Structural Engineering.
  • A minimum of 10 years management experience
  • Professional registration or license
  • Strong communication and listening skills
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments
  • Good leadership and organizational skills
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience actively designing structures with IBC codes and standards, including minimum of 5 years of experience leading structural engineering projects and sealing as Engineer of Record.
  • Demonstrated experience in team leadership and mentoring junior staff as described in the responsibilities portion of this job description.
  • Demonstrated experience in structural design within some or all of the market sectors and project types referenced above, for both internal and external clients, from preliminary design through construction, including design calculations, specifications, and construction drawings.
  • Deep understanding of IBC codes and referenced standards and demonstrated experience in design and construction of structural steel, concrete, and masonry structures.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and listening skills and ability to grow an internal and external professional network.
  • Master's degree in Civil or Architectural Engineering (ABET accredited) with emphasis in Structural Engineering
  • Structural Engineering (SE) licensure, including passing the NCEES vertical and lateral examinations.
  • NCEES Record.
  • A recognized leader in your current organization and/or professional community.
  • Active participation in technical or industry related organizations such as ASCE, SEAC, ACI, AISC, AIA, AGC, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience in structural design of commercial building, water/wastewater, and/or mission critical projects.

The expected compensation range for this position depends upon skills, experience, education and geographical location. (Stated benefits are for full-time regular positions.
