Job Summary

Under the direction of a radiologist, performs magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations at a technical level not requiring constant supervision. Performs a variety of technical imaging studies. Independent judgment, technical skills, and commitment to patient safety are considered requisite professional characteristics for individuals assuming the position of a MRI technologist.

Essential Functions:
  • Performs high quality MRI imaging studies by selecting specific software parameters that will produce a quality image for use by physicians in their determination of a diagnosis. Obtains protocols from radiologists and complies with image sequences defined in protocols. (10%)
  • Effectively interacts with Denver Health's PACS system through compliance with data entry, image post-processing, image archiving tasks, image quality assurance, and other related user interface activities. (10%)
  • Prepares and administers contrast media for patient examinations according to radiologists' direction. Technologist must ensure that the IV catheter, if used, is of appropriate type, size, and in the correct location for contrast administration. If an injector is used, then the MRI technologist must test the injector with saline prior to contrast injection. MRI technologists must be certified in CPR at all times in order to safely mediate contrast reactions. (10%)
  • Screens patients, Denver Health employees, and, visitors in order to guard the safety of: (1) those individuals undergoing an MRI examination; or (2) persons entering the MRI service venue. As part of the patient screening process, reviews the MRI Screening Form with the patient and does not allow the patient to enter the MRI scanning room until verification can be confirmed that contraindications do not exist which would preclude the patient from having an MRI examination. (10%)
  • Ensures patient safety, comfort, and personal dignity by following appropriate patient care guidelines to include use of 2 patient identifiers. Transports patients to and from the Department of Radiology, as needed, to prevent patient flow delays. (10%)
  • Assists in the maintenance of department inventory by ordering, stocking, and performing inventory checks on those medical supplies utilized when performing MRI examinations. (10%)
  • Verifies the physician order and relevant patient's history in Epic. Prior to performance of a MRI examination, consults with the relevant radiologist to obtain a written imaging study protocol. (10%)
  • To provide the necessary data for radiologists to interpret images, the technologist scans all relevant clinical information into the PACS, assigns prioritization box for the radiologists' worklist, and then transmits current (and comparison images, when applicable) to the PACS. These activities must be completed immediately following examination completion, not to exceed 1 hour. (10%)
  • Maintains imaging equipment by performing scheduled cleanings and tests; results of all cleanings and tests are documented, as appropriate. Contacts service personnel and notifies supervisory staff of equipment malfunctions. (10%)
  • Notates within the appropriate electronic/hardcopy document, as necessary, all pertinent patient information to comply with patient screening, ordering, charting, and medical record requirements (e.g., Epic's "Ticket to Ride" electronic handoff document, Radiology's hardcopy pregnancy questionnaire). (10%)

Education:
  • Post High School Diploma or Certificate Program Required

Work Experience:
  • 1-3 years of professional work experience in performing radiographic procedures, including 6 months experience in undertaking MRI imaging studies. Required

Licenses:
  • ABLS-Advanced Burn Life Support - ABA - American Burn Association Required and
  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association Required and
  • RTR-RT Radiography - ARRT - American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Required and

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated knowledge in how to operate MRI equipment and related technology.
  • Knowledge of how to address age-specific care needs of patients.
  • Demonstrated technical skill sets in the performance of MRI studies.
  • Demonstrable interpersonal skill sets that lead to effective communication and collaborations.
  • Competency in interpreting physician order requests for MRI imaging studies.
  • Ability to exercise prudent judgment in selecting and configuring equipment settings to compensate for patient physiologic variances.
  • Ability to consistently produce quality images of various anatomical structures.
