Trimble is recruiting for a Technical Writer to fill an opportunity in Westminster, CO.

Role overview:

We provide a service that ensures our customers can use our products as intended, and ensure that everyone has access to the right information at the right time for all customers whether they are just learning or an experienced master with any SketchUp products.

As our technical writer, you'll be helping customers overcome roadblocks and gain new insights with our software so that they can continue to find success. We're looking for someone who is passionate about writing and understands, or can learn the complexity of our product and be able to translate its use into a "for Dummies" reading level that's accessible by all experience levels. You'll be writing for architects, woodworkers, urban planners, teachers, circuit board designers, ruby developers. The technical writer will need to have mastered the elusive art of translating usage and functionality documentation for everyone.

The Technical Writer should come to the table with a strong understand of information architecture and writing in the DITA format to ensure good quality content management. Success in this position involves a strong drive to make SketchUp accessible to everyone as they are getting started or continuing their SketchUp education.

Responsibilities

  • Generation of technical content, user guides, and help center articles in a variety of forms, including PDF, HTML, XML

  • Technical editing including review and proofing of content created by other team members.

  • Organise material and complete writing assignments according to set standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology.

  • Maintain records and files of work and revisions.

  • Ownership and awareness of upcoming required work for a specific field.

  • Analyze developments in that specific field to determine need for revisions in previously published materials and development of new material.

  • Collaboration with production and engineering personnel and read material to become familiar with product technologies and production methods

  • Work with UX designers to select and edit photographs, drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts to illustrate material.

  • Support, communicate, reinforce and defend the mission, values and culture of the organization.

  • Develop content in the DITA model and structure technical information applying the DITA principles

  • Consistently demonstrate the ability to interpret complex technical descriptions into user friendly explanations.

  • Develop recommendations, project proposals, and implement changes that improve the way we work and increase clarity for customers.

  • Demonstrate the ability to gather information from multiple sources and create clear descriptions, workflows and documentation.

  • Develop and maintain documentation regarding our processes and decisions.

  • Provide new product input, testing, and release involvement based on your understanding of customers.

  • Frequently impress customers and co-workers with exceptional communication skills - own what you say, and be quick to admit misunderstandings and mistakes.

  • Manage content voice in alignment with the SketchUp brand to ensure knowledge is accessible at various skill levels and audiences.

  • Develop strategies to grow the existing knowledge resources for a larger audience and with new content types as they emerge.

Skills & Experience Required:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in information Systems, information technology, English, communications or related field with 1-2 years technical writing experience.

  • Strong written and verbal communications and experience working with content in multiple mediums.

  • Proven ability to understand DITA and complete writing assignments in the DITA model

  • Experience documenting for a highly technical and complex product.

  • Flexible approach to working in a changing environment.

  • Proven track record in technical writing, editing and proof-reading skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with high attention to detail

  • Familiar with basic web design concepts, comfortable with basic HTML markup, able to edit and enter HTML code autonomously from developers.

  • Experience with version control software and version control best practices.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad spectrum of subject matter experts, from developers to end-users

  • Demonstrate powerful use of autonomy, yet remain humble enough to ask for help.

  • Strong experience owning an end-to-end documentation creation process.

  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to prioritize and work on multiple projects in a fast-paced, changing environment.

  • A positive attitude, willing to jump in and tackle new challenges.

  • Strong understanding of web application technologies and how they work.

  • Experience working cross-departmentally to communicate the nuts and bolts of a product

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Knowledge of 3D modeling, 3D graphics processing or energy performance.

  • Background in Engineering, Architecture, Design, or User Experience.

  • Understanding of SketchUp and SketchUp related products
