Position Summary:
A Deputy Sheriff is responsible for the protection of life and property; prevention of crime; apprehension of criminals; and providing enforcement of laws and ordinances. Depending on staffing needs Deputies will be assigned to the Jail Division or the Patrol Division and may be required to serve at least one (1) year before becoming eligible to apply for transfer to other assignments.


Lateral applicants work history will be reviewed to determine salary within the stated range.


Examples of Duties for Success

Examples of Important and Essential Duties of Jail Deputy:

  • Adhere to policy, procedures, and post orders  
  • Responsible for the protection of life and property; prevention of crimes; apprehension of criminals  
  • Duties include but not limited to, answer calls for service; complete appropriate and required paperwork; testify in court; resolve conflict; complete required training; communicate clearly with citizens and other law enforcement professionals; dispense information to those who need it    
  • Prepare variety of reports
  • Enforce Federal, State, and local laws and regulations 
  • Patrol assigned area to enforce laws, investigate crimes, and arrest violators    
  • Investigate illegal or suspicious activities or persons, quell disturbances, arrest violators    
  • Conduct preliminary investigation at the scene of a crime, administer first aid, and gather evidence 
  • Book in new inmates by receiving inmates from various jurisdictions. 
  • Prepare Inmates for general housing. Prepare Inmates for release from custody    
  • Observe Inmate conduct and behavior
  • Supervise inmates, escort inmates within detention facility, search inmates and cells for contraband
  • Inspect locks, windows, bars, grates, doors, for tampering throughout the facility   
  • Rotate between module floor and module tower
  • Assist in preparing inmates for In-house advisements and court 
  • Transport inmates on medical runs
  • React effectively and safely in emergency and stressful situations
  • Participate and complete annual law enforcement driving certification  
  • Participate and complete 16 hours of annual training in the area of P.P.C.T.  (Must be certified every quarter)  
  • Participate in training (Quarterly Range Qualification, PPCT, TASER, OC Re-Certification)    
  • Perform Deputy duties at parades, processions, demonstrations, community activities, and sporting events   
  • Perform other duties that are assigned

  • Establish traffic control and Deputy protection at incidents that may attract crowds.    
  • Serve civil papers, court documents, and subpoenas    
  • Participate and complete annual law enforcement driving certification   
  • Participate and complete 16 hours of annual training in the area of P.P.C.T.  (Must be certified every quarter)   
  • Participate in training ( Quarterly Range Qualification, PPCT, TASER, OC Re-Certification)    
  • Perform Deputy duties at parades, processions, demonstrations, community activities, and sporting events   
  • Check and report on deficient streetlights, signs, road surfaces and other facilities that serve the public    
  • Perform other duties that are assigned

Qualifications for Success

To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:
-Possess a High School Diploma or GED
-Must currently be P.O.S.T. Certified
-Must be at least 21 years of age
-Possess a valid Colorado Drivers' License
-Must have vision correctable to 20/40
-Ability to be assertive and self-motivated

The testing process includes:
  • Written Exam (flexible ): 
    • The Adams County Sheriff’s Office offers testing services for the Deputy Sheriff position through National Testing Network (NTN). To register with NTN and schedule a test, go to www.nationaltestingnetwork.com, select ‘Find Jobs’, then select Law Enforcement Jobs and sign up for the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.

      • Complete the NTN registration process and schedule your test.
        Review all information related to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Sheriff position, including minimum requirements, salary, and benefits.

      • Review the Frequently Asked Questions and take an online practice test (if desired).
      • Upon completion of your scheduled exam, scores are automatically forwarded to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office. Candidates who attain a passing score of 70% or greater on the entry level exam will be placed on the Sheriff’s Office list. The Sheriff’s Office will contact candidates on the list and will invite them to participate in further stages of the selection process.

  • Physical Ability Course (PAC)
    • The PAC is a timed course wherein you will complete 9 obstacles. This phase is pass/fail. Candidates must complete the course in 1 minute, 57 seconds or less to continue on in the selection process. Participation for the PAC testing is mandatory.  
  • Physical Fitness Test Battery (mandatory)
    • The physical fitness assessment is a series of four tests to include: cadence push-ups, sit-ups, a 1 1/2 mile run and a flexibility test.  Candidates may receive up to 40 points for the fitness assessment. This portion of the test is mandatory. 
  • Oral Board Interview
    • The oral board interview will take approximately 30 minutes. Candidates must obtain a 70% or greater in the oral board to continue.
  • Opportunity to obtain additional points in the areas of education and military service.

All  but the written will take place on the same day. A detailed email will be sent to eligible candidates.

The Background process may include any/all of the following (all steps must be passed successfully):
  • Two-phase psychological evaluation
  • Integrity Interview
  • CVSA exam
  • Physical exam
